What is the significance of the Ontario Greenbelt?

The Ontario Greenbelt is a 1.8 million acre allotment of land to be used for green, sustainable land use purposes. Established in 2005, the Greenbelt encompasses the Niagara escarpment, Oak Ridges Moraine, Rogue Park and hundreds of rural towns and villages. The area is permanently protected; the farmland, forests, watersheds and wetlands under the Greenbelt’s jurisdiction are forever shielded from development and/or urban sprawl. This is the largest green belt in the world, and a very positive precedent set for the protection of large tracts of land.
