Earthday was started by Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1962. He was bothered that environmental issues were not a focus of the country so he convinced President Kennedy to start Earth Day to spread awareness. President Kennedy like the idea and went on 5 day 11 state conservation tour in September of 1963 to begin spreading the word. At its core, Earth Day is a grass roots cause to spread environmental awareness that had great success and has remained a staple in the United States since.

I believe that the significance of earth day is to learn, teach, and practice the ways in which people can protect the earth and its biodiversity. Earth day is important because it is a national day to not only celebrate everything that the Earth has to offer, but to also advocate for its protection.
