What is the significance of the Ardi archaeological find?

The main reason the discover of Ardi is so important in human evolution is because of our relation to chimpanzees. The 4.4 million year old skeleton has an opposed big toe, which was used to walk around on the ground rather than in trees. Also, the creature appears to have walked upright when on the ground because it had smaller hands like Lucy. This could mean that humans and chimpanzees evolved from the same species, one which walked on the ground and did not come down from the frees as previously thought.
