What is the shortest life span of a fly?

Mayflies, while not true flies, have one of the shortest adult lifespans of any insect. They molt into their adult stage, leave the water, mate, lay eggs, and die — often in the span of a single day. As far as true flies are concerned, the laboratory favorite the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) live less than two months.
