*A* shoal is simply a sandbar. It’s a raised stretch of sand, silt or gravel that extends out into a body of water, or sticks up from the middle of a body of water. (Like, if a river is down, the water may be low enough to expose the shallower bottom areas. These are sandbars, also called shoals.
The term is also applied to fish. Fish tend to gather in shoals, which are also commonly referred to as schools.
