Shade grown coffee is exactly what it sounds like, coffee grown in the shade. It preserves more of the natural environment rather than clear cutting a forest to grow coffee, and uses the older varieties that were made to grow in the shade. While production might be reduced per acre, keeping more of the local animal’s natural habitat sounds worth it to me.
Shade grown coffee is coffee that is grown under a tree or shrub. Growing coffee in the shade discourages weed growth, protects the crop from frost, and helps increase the number of pollinators in the area. Check out the link for more information.
