What is sea floor spreading and why is it important?

Sea floor spreading is the formation of new oceanic crusts by volcanic action (seeping of molten rock from withing the earth). This is important for two reasons. First it is the force behind continental drift (the movement of all of the continents away from each other). Second, it is the cause behind subduction zones, such as the Ring of Fire in the Pacific region, these zones are host to frequent volcanic activity and earthquakes.
