    Elephants and mammoths make up the family Elephantidae. The Asian Elephant belongs to the genus Elephas, with the binomial species name of Elephas maximus. The African Elephants belong in the genus Loxodonta. There are two species, African Bush elephant and African Forest Elephant, named Loxodonta africana and Loxodonta cyclotis, respectfully.
