Heat waves are any extended period of time with extensive heat and often humidity.  They occur in warm climates during prolonged periods of high atmospheric pressure when there are little to no rain clouds.  Because of the low pressure, the air and ground heat and remain heated easily.  Heat waves also often occur on the warmer side of a jet stream.  They can also occur from large masses of hot desert air being pushed up by winds.
