    A sanitary landfill is one where waste is kept isolated until it has completely degraded. For a landfill to be considered ‘sanitary’, it has to meet 4 criteria: be isolated, have engineering preparation, have permanent control and maintenance, and have plans for waste to be layered and compacted.
