Many communities hold e-waste collections at grocery stores or city centers. Rather than trying to dispose of it yourself, just give it to a local collection drive. The e-waste will then be dismantled and the products that can be re-used will, and others can be melted and re-molded.
Concerning computers, some companies will take their old computers back for disposal or recycling. Also, consider donating your old electronics to a Goodwill store if they still work.
Big box electronic stores, like Best Buy, also have recycing programs. In some cases they may charge a few dollars to dispose of them (for example if you leave a hard drive in a computer) but it is guaranteed that that your electronics will be properly disposed, recycled, or reused for spare parts.
