Snake venom enters the blood stream and does its work from there. There are a couple kinds of snake venom, one is the cytotoxic venom which targets muscles to cause paralysis in the victim. It may also target the heart and be lethal. The other is neurotoxic venom which affects the nervous system and the brain. However, some snake venom employs both kinds. Often the goal is to harm the victim badly enough that the snake will have time to digest it. Snake venom is mostly comprised of proteins and enzymes, and for this reason one can digest venom without being harmed as it digests like most food.
