Biocides are chemical substances designed to kill harmful organisms.  They include all types of pesticides and antimicrobials (antibiotics, spermicides, antibacterials, etc).

Any time you introduce foreign chemicals to the soil, especially chemicals that are specifically designed to hinder life, you risk altering the soil in such a way as to prohibit the healthy growth of plants and soil-dwelling organisms.  This is not to say that any and all biocides should be completely avoided everywhere in the world.  Some biocides are absolutely essential to the protection of human and animal health.  But it’s important to understand that introducing biocides to any natural environment may have unintended and possibly harmful consequences.
