The individuals were employees of the Virginia Company and laborers, and as such they were armed, given food and clothing – and were promised that after 7 years of indenture to the Company they would own land of their own. The laws of the area were English rule. Wiith the colony starving and not making money for the Virginia Company, they changed the laws to allow each laborer to keep the food he grew and as time and the drought passed they began to expand planting and in 1614 they had their first successful tobacco harvest.
