The Respect the Refuge campaign’s purpose is to protect farmer’s crops and the industry by educating and raising awareness about the Insect Resistant Management requirements. Driven by seed companies and organizations such as Monsanto, Kruger, and the National Corn Grower’s Association, the campaign provides educational tools to dealers, growers and others involved in the industry. The campaign was created due to the lack of farmers properly following the EPA regulations on planting certain biotech hybrids. When you plant insect resistant corn hybrids, the EPA mandates that you plant refuge crops as well so that the insects do not form a resistance to the seed. The campaign includes such efforts as sending postcards to farmers and setting up highway billboards in the Corn Belt.
