The Milky Way Galaxy is believed to be a spiral galaxy, meaning that it has a central “nuclear” region with several “arms” that spiral away from the center, creating a disk shape. The galaxy is made up of an estimated 200 to 400 billion stars, planets, and nebulae and has a diameter of 100,000 lightyears (the distance that light travels in the timespan of one year). Our solar system, including the sun, planets, and moons, is a part of the Milky Way Galaxy. It is located far out on one of the spiraling arms of the galaxy, about 26,000 lightyears from its center nuclear region.
