What is the relationship between moss, lichen, and algae?

Beyond being often confused with one another, two of these three organisms are not related in any way.

Lichens are a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an algae or cyanobacteria. One of the most common hairy lichens is Old Man’s Beard. http://www.solsticelight.com/aks/gallery/lichens/ak/lichinfo.htm

Mosses are small green plants.  http://www.backyardnature.net/mosses.htm For more information on mosses.

Algae are classified in protista although larger algae (including seaweed such as kelp) are commonly mistaken for plants.  http://hcs.osu.edu/hcs300/algae.htm
