Red Algae, also known as Rhodophytes, is a type of phytoplankton that carries a pigment called phycoerythrin, which reflects red light and absorbs blue light. Because blue light penetrates deeper in the water, Red Algae are able to photosynthesize further down the ocean. They are an important source of food and contribute to the formation of coral reefs.
