What is ‘rare earth element mining’?

Rare Earth elements consist mostly of a group of metals referred to as lanthanide elements on the periodic table. There are 15 lanthanide elements. Yttrium is not part of the lanthanide group but is also considered a rare element.

These metals are necessary to the manufacturing of materials that are used in a myriad of tech products and non-tech products. China has had a monopoly on the export of these metals for some time, having extensive access and selling them for very cheap. Recently China has halted the exportation of rare Earth elements and some American opportunists have picked up the slack.
