What is a rain garden?

A rain garden is a garden that carefully stores and utilizes the water it receives (rainfall and stormwater runoff). Usually, they are situated near a source of runoff, and help slow stormwater runoff down. The gardens are often small and designed with specific plants to withstand the types of nutrients that runoff contains. There are both under-drained and self-contained rain gardens.
