A rain garden serves as a buffer to for storm water and rainfall in order to slow erosion. The plants selected for a rain garden serve as purifiers, so that chemicals like nitrogen and phosphorus do not make it to storm drains. Most rain gardens include “herbaceous perennials”, shrubs and trees. However other plants can be used, but do require more maintainance.
