Rose petals (on the rosebud itself) attract insects for pollination. Leaves on the stems collect sunlight for photosynthesis, thus converting the sunlight to vital nutrients. As for the thorns, well it may surprise you to hear that like animals, plants have survival mechanisms. Roses have thorns to prevent animals from eating them.
