Leaves serve the very real and important purpose of performing photosynthesis in plants. Leaves are made-up of cells packed with chloroplasts, and many leaves 9as evident by the name broad leafed trees), will try to maximize their surface area to get the most energy. Leaves feed the plant, absorbing water, carbon dioxide and sun light and converting them to sugar and oxygen. Additionally, this is why many leaves fall of when the days get shorter, there is far less sun light and so it is harder for trees to grow so they instead entier a state of hibernation.
