Dredging can have many different purposes. Commonly, dredging is used to move sediment build-up from one location to another if it becomes a problem. It can also be used to investigate the ground beneath, maybe for scientific research. It is sometimes used to clear room for something like an artificial reef or to rebuild a beach that has been washed away.
