If you ask this question, you may as well ask “What purpose does any animal serve?”. Scientifically, all organisms on this planet serve the purpose of reproducing themselves. Fruit flies are very good at this, with female druit flies, layin gup to 100 eggs per day. For this reason, they have been used in many experiments involving genetics, and a lot of what we know about our genetic code we learned from these experiments. In this way, the fruit fly has been very useful to us. Consider that 75% of human diseases have analogs in fruit flies. Larval fruit flies feed on rotting fruit and the micro organisms that are usually present on the fruit, so in the ecosystem, they serve as a hybrid decomposer/predator.
