Water catchment systems catch and store rainwater for futures uses. Basically, the water that runs off a roof or other surface is caught as it comes down the gutters and is stored in tanks. So that in the dry months plants can be watered, or the water can be filtered for residential use, without using (and therefore transporting and paying for) more water.
Depending on what surfaces the water is being run across, the stored water may need to be filtered or treated later. In general, rain water is immediately usable as potable water, but it is always good to take precautions and either chemically or mechanically filter the water before consumption (such as by using reverse osmosis), though it would be safe to use for agriculture.
