What is a puppy mill?

A puppy mill is essentially a puppy farm. It is a dog breeding ‘business’ where profit is the driving force. Often times, the animals kept in these facilities are mistreated and lead very sad and disease filled lives. It is suggested that you do not support such businesses unless you are completely aware of the breeding conditions.

These dog breeding facilities operate with an emphasis upon profits above animal welfare and it can result in substandard conditions when taking care of the dogs. There are estimated nearly 4,000 puppy mills in the U.S. that produce more than half a million puppies a year. The poor breeding conditions in those puppy mills often result in health and/or social problems of the puppies. Puppies raised in puppy mills are more prone to pneumonia as well as hip dysplasia as well as problems with their temperament.
