There are several things you should do in order to be environmentally responsible, including using paper bags instead of plastic, remembering to remove the lining, read the packaging, and use a flushable inner liner. See the link for complete advice.

There are companies who are very involved and working towards making raising children green. Some of the perks are they are often elemental chlorine-free, latex free and perfume free.
Typical diapers take 500 years to degrade. Biodegradable diapers (50-150 days) are available from http://www.gdiapers.com/ . They can also be flushed down the toilet.
