It really depends on the metal for the type of process that is need to recycle. Recycling common metals like steel and aluminum is worthwhile because they can be recycled indefinitely without losing any of their properties. After the materials are collected, they are sorted and separated into different metal components. The scrap is then compacted. It’s sold to minimills that process them into steel. Processing scrap metal into steel requires about 74% less energy than virgin ore. An electric arc furnace melts the scrap metal down, a continuous caster converts it to solid steel, and a rehearing furnace and rolling mill processes it for use.
