This is known as plant respiration, and, as in the respiration of humans and other animals, it releases carbon dioxide and water as end products. The first step of respiration is glycolysis, the breakdown of one glucose (sugar) molecule into two of pyruvate. In plants that have taken in sufficient oxygen, this is followed by the Krebs Cycle and the electron transport chain. In anaerobic (no oxygen) environments, glycolysis in plants is followed by alcohol fermentation.
