What problems does smuggling pose for the environment?

Smuggling of some products can allow for them to be produced in an unsustainable fashion without the consumer having any information on how it was made.  Many products have to meet standards for how they are made so they remain safe.  If these products are smuggled then there is no standard that needs to be upheld for those products.  Also, if a species is endangered, many times the trading of products of that animal are either restricted or stopped all together.  Smuggling allows for their to be an illegal sale of those products on the market.
