What is the problem with BFRs?

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are chemical flame retardants, and are very effective in plastics and textile applications.  BFRs prevent electronics, clothing, and furniture from catching on fire.  In terms of safety, there is concern about the use of brominated chemicals in household furnishings and their interaction with children.  There is also concern about pets coming into contact with BFRs.  Some European countries have even banned certain BFRs.
