What is the primary argument Republicans make against global warming?

There is a group of scientists who do not believe that human activities can have an impact on the overall climate of the planet.  Over 17,000 have signed a petition regarding this through the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine, which states that, “there is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate.”

People arguing against global warming often cite weather as a reason that it’s not occurring; they claim that temperatures are not rising, or that rising temperatures are caused by “nearby urban development” and will not actively affect the climate.  There is also the idea that because our future predictions for the climate are based on computer models instead of historical data, they are probably incorrect.

There are a few more arguments listed here as well.

Republicans make a couple of arguments against addressing global warming.  One is that the physical and economic effects of global warming may not be as dire as scientists predict.  The other argument is that even if the US curbs its greenhouse gas emissions to lessen the pace of global warming, the positive effect will be negligible if all other countries around the world don’t make similar efforts.  China, for example, is emitting tons of greenhouse gases as they develop, but they are taking some steps to reduct their impact.  But unless the US agrees to address global warming, other countries will also argue that any efforts they make would be neglible without the participation of the US.
