What president started the recycling program in America?

This is a little tough to answer since recycling hasn’t always been a national issue.  Much of where recycling and eco-friendliness is today is a direct result of work done by individuals and companies rather than anyone in government.  However, this TIMELINE gives a great overview of how we got to where we are today.  In it you’ll find that Lyndon Johnson was the first U.S. President to commission a National Survey about waste management…so I suppose you could say he at least started the green ball a-rollin’.
