Alternative for what purpose? If you mean an alternative for electricity generation, there are many alternatives, including burning natural gas and oil, nuclear power, hydroelectric generation, wave, wind, solar, and other sources.
None of the others are “practical” if you mean they are economically viable today on the scale that coal is.
Coal is a finite resource, although there’s more of it left than other forms of fossil fuels — the practical alternatives, then, are the prominent “clean” energies — wind, solar, hydrogen, fusion, etc. Our economy is self-regulating enough that our reliance on coal reflects a need for it, but hopefully practical full alternatives will emerge.
