    It’s a hard question to answer, because different rating systems use different criteria to judge poverty, and GDPs and average wages are constantly changing. But the Democratic Republic of the Congo always ends up near the top of the list. It’s 2008 GDP was only $300 per person! On the scale of poverty, it is definitely considered “extreme poverty,” with fresh water, food, housing, education, and medicine all being in short supply.     A number of different factors determine a country’s poverty. Are you considering the wealth of the citizens or the wealth of the nation in terms of gross domestic product (GDP)? The country with the lowest income per capita in 2009 was Burundi, a small central African nation. The country with 2009’s lowest GDP was Tuvalu, a Pacific island nation.

    Sadly, Haiti is among the poorest in the world. Most of the people live on less than US $2 a day, and some less than $1. So it is ever more tragic when such a country already in despair is ravaged by the worst earthquake in some time.
