A study by UCLA has found that high levels of exposure to carbon monoxide and ozone can cause heart defects in newborns. And in China, exposure to pollution from coal plants such as sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon dioxide have caused massive rates of birth defects including congenital heart disease, cleft palate, and hydrocephalus (an excess of liquid in the brain).
