A report in 2006 stated that the CO2 emissions per passenger/per mile for an automobile were 0.53 and were 0.62 for an airplane. In terms of fuel use, a 747 burns approximately 5 gallons of fuel per mile while a car burns about .04 gallons of fuel per mile. However, when you consider that a 747 carries about 500 passengers on a flight, while a car can maybe take 4, the numbers change drastically.
