The Plastiki is a catamaran boat comprised of 12,500 plastic bottles — the same number of which are consumed in the U.S. every 8.3 seconds. Solar power is used for on-board facilities and there is a bio-diesel engine in case of emergency. It is sailing from San Francisco to Sydney in order to raise awareness of ecological issues.

Plastiki refers to a 60-foot (20m) boat that is made out of 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles and other recycled PET plastic and waste products. The boat was basically built using “cradle to cradle” design philosophies and includes many renewable energy systems. These include solar panels, wind and trailing propeller turbines, and bicycle generators.
