There are a variety of dunegrasses which can grow rapidly in depleted soil. Their network of roots can act to both nourish and stabilize soil, allowing larger plants and shrubs to grow, and eventually trees. The type to use depends on the climate (in this case tropical) and water source (they come in fresh and saltwater species).
