The pumpkin is said to produce more seeds than any other fruit. A close competitor would be the watermelon. Producing a high abundance of seeds is an evolutionary advantage to plants whose seeds are particularly ineffective and unlikely to become fertile. Seeds are spread through dispersion: animals who eat the fruit don’t digest the seeds, and the seeds are delivered to the soil through animals’ feces.
