Simple grass feeds more animals than any other plant. One quarter of the world’s land is grassland, including half the African continent. Elephants, bison, some species of geese, rabbits, gazelles, deer and all sorts of other animals rely on grass for their food–and these animals in turn are food for many predators.
This question prompted me to wonder what the largest staple crop is on the planet. I guess at first that it would be rice, but according to omniscient wikipedia, corn is the grain with the largest worldwide production. I guess corn is grown to do a lot more than just feed humans. Rice, though, provides “more than one fifth of the calories consumed worldwide by the human species.”
That is pretty interesting.
