Planned obsolescence is a technique used by companies that will make their products out of date and basically obsolete at some point in the future.  Video game systems are notorious for doing this.  They put out the first generation of the system knowing that in a few years the next generation will come out and no one will use the first generation anymore.  Then the cycle repeats itself with the third generation.  The process naturally stimulates the economy and demand because customers have to keep coming back for more rather than buy the best product and then never needing an improvement ever again.
