What is “pixilation?”

A “pixel” is a tiny square that composes one very small part of a digital image.  When an image is pixelated, it means the squares are clearly visible.  Every digital image has pixels in it–sometimes, like in a grainy image, you can see the individual squares (the pixelation), but in a clear image you can’t, because the pixels are too small to be distinguished by the naked eye.

Pixilation comes from the word pixilated and is a technique that uses real actors in an animated film.  It is done through the process of t repeatedly posing while one or more frame is taken and then changing the pose slightly before the next set of frames are taken. The first film to use this technique was “Jobard ne peut pas voir les femmes travailler” (Jobard can’t see women working) in 1911, since the Canadians have used it in short films and bands such as the Talking Heads have used pixilation in their music videos.
