Overhunting has been increasing around the world since the industrial revolution. In the 1800’s, there were 3 to 5 billion passenger pigeons. By the early 1900’s, the species was eliminated. There were around 60 million American bison on the Great Plains in 1850. 40 years later, there were only 150 left. Snowy egrets nearly went extinct at the turn of the century, and many whale species almost went extinct as well.
Overhunting is definitely still an issue today. African rhinoceroses, elephants, and many large cat species are being overhunted as are many other species around the world.
