Only about 1% of the earth’s water is available for human consumption. Of the remaining water, 98% is salt water and the rest of the fresh water is locked up in glaciers. The amount of that freshwater that is safe is even smaller when you consider that most drinking water must be treated for bacteria and other contaminants to be safe for human consumption.
