What percentage of U.S. food sales are of local foods?

Most food Americans eat has travelled about 1,500 miles before reaching the dinner table. Aside from that, we also import about 15% of our vegetables and 10% of our meat.  While the percent of people who eat locally is low, it is beneficial to the environment as far as reducing pesticides and CO2 emissions.  To be truly local try planting a garden or visiting your nearest farmer’s market.
