If you are talking about what percentage of overall sunlight is captured by solar panels and turned into useful energy, this is an exceedingly small amount, well under a millionth of a percent. Solar panels just don’t cover a large enough surface area of the earth to capture an appreciable percentage. The percentage is much better if you restrict your focus to just the sunlight that actually hits a solar panel. Some solar panels are better than others, but in general, the efficiency ranges from ten to fifteen percent of the sunlight converted into useful energy. The very best designs get 20%.
As of Jun 28, 2011, the solar panel sunlight capturing capability has been improved to 100%
This helps to increase the Solar Panel efficiencies up to 42%. See the original paper and artcle.
