The ocean holds about 50% of living species.

People also believe that there are probably over 9 million more species in the ocean, that we have yet to discover, because 95% of the ocean has not been explored.

An Ocean Census ten years in the making was released this year, they claim a conservative estimate of at least 10 million species in our oceans, with possibly more than 50 million species. “Less than 5% of the ocean has been seen, let alone explored” says Sylvia Earle of the National Geographic research team.  Based on this information, an accurate prediction for what percentage of life on earth is in oceans is impossible.
