Albinism is very rare. Around 5 people per 100,000 in the US and Europe are affected by the disorder. The percentage is higher in other parts of the world, particularly countries in Africa. Worldwide, 1 in 17,000 people is albino. However, there was an outburst of albino killings in Tanzania in 2008 that later spread southward. Witch doctors claimed their body parts could be used to create magic medicines and potions when the killings began.
